Job Description

The Correctional Registered Nurse (RN) provides professional nursing care within a correctional facility setting. The RN is responsible for delivering high-quality healthcare to incarcerated individuals, maintaining accurate medical records, and ensuring the health and safety of inmates. The nurse will work closely with other medical staff, security personnel, and administrators to ensure the well-being of all individuals within the facility.

Key Responsibilities:

Patient Care:

Conduct thorough health assessments and physical exams on inmates.
Administer medications and injections as prescribed by healthcare providers.
Provide first aid and emergency medical interventions as needed.
Monitor and manage chronic health conditions (e.g., diabetes, hypertension, asthma).
Assist with the management of mental health and substance abuse disorders.
Respond to medical emergencies within the facility and provide life-saving interventions when required.

Documentation & Reporting:

Maintain accurate and up-to-date medical records for all inmates.
Document all patient interactions, including assessments, treatments, and follow-ups.
Report unusual findings or incidents to appropriate staff or authorities.
Adhere to confidentiality guidelines and ensure the security of health records.

Patient Education & Counseling:

Educate inmates about their medical conditions, prescribed treatments, and preventive care.
Counsel patients on issues related to personal health and hygiene, wellness, and disease prevention.
Promote health education programs within the facility, such as smoking cessation and nutrition counseling.

Collaboration & Teamwork:

Collaborate with physicians, nurse practitioners, medical assistants, and other healthcare professionals to coordinate care.
Work alongside correctional officers to ensure a safe and secure environment during medical procedures.
Participate in case management, interdisciplinary team meetings, and healthcare planning.

Infection Control & Safety:

Adhere to infection control protocols and ensure a clean, safe, and sanitary medical environment.
Implement universal precautions and ensure compliance with healthcare regulations.
Assist in maintaining the facility’s compliance with health standards and regulations.

Mental Health and Crisis Intervention:

Recognize signs of mental health crises and collaborate with psychiatric staff to provide appropriate care.
Offer support in managing psychiatric patients, including administering medications and monitoring symptoms.
Qualifications:

Education & Experience:

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Nursing (RN).
Current and valid Registered Nurse license in the state where the facility is located.
Minimum of 1-2 years of nursing experience (experience in corrections or working with underserved populations is preferred).

Skills & Knowledge:

Strong clinical skills in adult care, emergency care, and chronic disease management.
Ability to handle sensitive and potentially dangerous situations in a correctional environment.
Knowledge of legal, ethical, and professional guidelines governing healthcare in correctional settings.
Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with patients, medical staff, and correctional personnel.
Ability to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team.
Crisis intervention and conflict resolution skills.

Certifications (Preferred but not required):

Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification.
Certification in correctional nursing or healthcare management.
Physical Demands:
Ability to stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.
Must be able to lift and move patients, and assist with patient transfers.
Ability to respond quickly to emergency situations.
Working Conditions:
Correctional facility environment, including inmate interaction under secure conditions.
Shifts may include nights, weekends, and holidays, depending on facility requirements.
Exposure to potentially hazardous materials and situations requiring adherence to safety protocols.
