Director, Branded Environments - OnBrand
The Global Advertising and Brand Management (GABM) organization has a mission to create marketplace demand and drive commerce for American Express through differentiated and innovative products, partnerships, marketing, and customer experiences.
OnBrand - American Express' In-House Creative agency - is on a journey of exciting expansion. We are focused on developing forward thinking ideas and working across channels.
The Branded Environments team is responsible for setting the vision and design strategy for how the American Express brand is expressed in physical spaces, drawing upon the brand's visual identity and core principles. The team manages the design of branded spaces from concept through construction and launch and into ongoing operations, ensuring the design intent and desired brand experience remain intact, ultimately building brand value through purposeful immersive experiences.
The Director, Branded Environments will lead the design strategy and development of American Express Card Member environments and experiences globally, focusing on travel and hospitality related segments. They will lead a team of managers to continuously innovate and evolve our physical space programs, strengthening brand value, differentiation, and driving relevance through design.
Responsibilities:

Leverage design excellence to bring our brand to life in new and memorable ways for our customers

Drive design innovation by keeping up with external best practices, trends, industry inspiration, and category thought leaders to influence our ways of working

Own relationships with our interior design agencies and architect partners, including developing creative briefs, defining project needs and scopes of work, leading design discussions, negotiating contracts, identifying and mitigating project risks, etc.

Support internal business partners (business development, product, operations, real estate, marketing, public relations) through consistent and proactive collaboration, thought leadership, and a commitment to product quality

Manage the environmental brand direction and oversight for all stages of design throughout:
o RFP responses
o Existing space audits
o Conceptual design
o Design development
o Drawing reviews and submittals
o Construction / fabrication
o Post-construction and punch
o Ongoing operations
- Demonstrate team leadership capabilities including fostering a spirit of collaboration, developing team-focused goals that support larger department objectives, and coaching through mutual feedback
Qualifications:

8-10 years of experience in commercial interior design, branded environmental design, or similar discipline

Proven track record of design excellence and brand innovation
-
Proactive, assertive leader comfortable working in a highly collaborative cross-functional environment and building relationships to influence decision-making

Passionate and knowledgeable about impactful branded hospitality environments and experiences
-
Strong sense of strategic design principles and understanding of permanent physical space design with a brand lens
-
Ability to craft and communicate a purposeful design narrative that drives feedback and the decision-making process
-
Familiarity with space planning, floorplans, furniture planning, and adjacencies
-
Understanding of production and construction processes, including documentation, timelines, budgeting, and terminology

Ability to read and interpret interior / architectural design drawings, construction drawings, and technical documentation

General knowledge of furniture and material specifications

Strong business acumen including understanding of cost analyses, risks, tradeoffs, and prioritization

Ability to clearly communicate design strategies and solutions both verbally and visually to internal and external stakeholders with varying degrees of subject matter expertise

Ability to manage multiple complex workstreams in various phases simultaneously, meeting budget and timeline expectations

Experience working in travel or airport related contexts a plus
Requirements

Bachelor's degree in design, architecture, or similar

Case studies/portfolio demonstrating ability to lead environmental / interior design initiatives and deliver best-in-class design solutions
Qualifications
Salary Range: $130,000.00 to $205,000.00 annually bonus equity (if applicable) benefits
