JOB DESCRIPTION
Surgical Technology Instructor
Surgical Technology Instructors will be responsible for providing quality classroom and lab instruction for students, ensuring they gain the knowledge and skills that are required for entry-level employment in their chosen field.
Qualifications: Be a graduate of a CAAHEP-accredited surgical technology program with a current Certified Surgical Technology certification. Must have a minimum of three years of field experience as a scrub tech. Associate degree preferred.

Instructor Duties
- Ensure safety of students
- Stay updated on current trends in healthcare including HIPPA, OSHA, Bloodborne pathogens, and any other affecting Surgical Techs
- Maintain respect at all times for confidential information
- Interact in a positive manner with staff, students, faculty, and the public
- Promote good public relations through personal appearance, attitude, and conversation
- Contact the appropriate official (CEO, President) concerning all problems
- Attend faculty meetings
- Evaluate the students’ clinical ability in accordance with the program’s established criteria
- Maintain student attendance records
- Maintain current knowledge of the program’s objectives and standards and participate in the evaluation of the program’s effectiveness
- Continue quota of in-services, professional development, and continuing education
- Assist with determining needs for your program
- Create an environment of Excellence in Customer Service for students
Student/Classroom:
- Grade papers, tests, workbooks and reports
- File student paperwork
- Student Tutoring - One-on-one when the need arises
- Plan and schedule field trips and guest speakers
- Evaluate the student/patient charts weekly
- Forward grades to the Registrar weekly
- Enter grades every three weeks and attendance daily in transcripts
- Clean classroom daily
- Apply ST handbook rules and regulations including SIPs
Lecture:
- Research and update subjects, teaching materials and teaching aids regularly. Before making final changes, discuss with the supervisor. Must be consistent with other ST team members
- Prepare lecture material in advance.
- Order needed copies, supplies, teaching aids, medical supplies, etc.
- Be very organized with lecture. Know exactly what you are going to say to the students.
- Include all curriculum in lecture, and ensure the students know what to study for exams
Laboratory:
- Make sure all needed equipment is in working order
- Make sure that all needed supplies are available
- Order supplies when they are low (fill out the order request form)
- Apply ST handbook rules and regulations including SIP’s
- Clean and organize the lab after each use
- Ensure consistency with ST team members when teaching lab skills
- Communicate regularly with DH, President, and CEO with any concerns or needs
Additional Duties:
- Mentor other instructors as needed
- Assist with training new instructors when necessary
- Participate in student graduation ceremonies, ST week, etc.
- Answer telephones as necessary
- Counsel students as necessary
- 2 healthcare-related continuing education per year
- 2 teaching methodology courses/lectures per year
- Attend staff meetings and training sessions

Physical Requirements
- Ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time and to present oral lectures/demonstrations, walk, bend, lift, push, pull, twist, reach up/out, stoop, and carry items occasionally in excess of twenty-five (25) pounds. Some lifting of lab equipment and supplies may be required.
- Ability to be on their feet for most of the instructional period to best monitor student work and behaviors
- Ability to use fingers to grasp, move, or assemble very small objects; Manual dexterity to operate standard office and surgical lab equipment.
- Visual: Have enough visual ability and peripheral vision to function in a surgical environment
